There is an essence that reality has left the building. That truth has lost its value, that politically we have entered a dark tunnel without knowing its end. It is like the history repeating its self but this time as a farce. This photographic project was created during my master program on the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague as an attempt to dive into the theme of post - truth. It is based on the killing of the reporter Peter De Vries by the Mocro mafia but could be also the last day of any reporter that puts his life in danger in order to fight for the truth (there was also the killing of the reporter Karaivaz in Greece by the mafia the same year (2021), which happened in a similar way).
I view documentary photography as a very powerful form of expression and documentation. Because image can be very authoritative at its nature, through creating a more speculative project we can democratize the medium giving also more emphasis on the symbolism of the picture and not only be based about what we actually see (I am deeply influenced by the idea of Nietzsche that art can engage with the world in better way than science because it acknowledges its own fictional and illusory nature).
I chose to use instax as a medium because it gives to my project another layer of truthfulness. I find that there is a reality in the presence of a physically developed picture and that because it can’t be manipulated (is a physical photo taken by an instax camera), it gives a sort of “testimony” of realness in it’s context.
